Most published literature represents ethnopharmacological surveys and their application in the Near Eastern folk medicine, followed by in vitro studies of these plants cytotoxic activities on tumor cell lines. The obtained data highlights, for the first time, the most frequently used medicinal plants for the treatment of cancer in the region of the Middle East, thus underscoring their significance as natural anticancer agents. 

Some plants are not reported for anticancer activities in the literature, but were used by practitioners to treat cancer during the research. Among medicinal plants documented, people have used a few for treating cancer as well. Among the plants that were cited the most was Cannabis sativa L., which was used for cancer mostly because of its analgesic, anti-nausea, and anti-emetic properties. Some pharmacological relevance of the plant may have been attributed to the presence of phytoconstituents like flavonoids, saponins, phenolics, glycosides, alkaloids, and tannins in extracts; which were found to impart anti-cancer cell activities. 

Moreover, researchers found several plants as an excellent source to design and manufacture novel, effective, tolerable, and safer anticancer drugs than the synthetic ones. For years, natural products were good sources for agents for fighting cancer, and plants played an outsized role in anticancer product development. The high toxicity of certain cancer chemotherapy drugs, along with adverse side effects and drug resistance, has increased demand for natural compounds as new anti-cancer drugs. 

While some treatments have been shown to lessen side effects from treating cancer, many treatments are unsupported by studies. Some herbs can interact with certain cancer treatments and medications, causing side effects. Some herbs may interact with common cancer treatments or medicines, changing the way a treatment works or the way it is taken. Scientists say herbs like thyme and oregano have anti-cancer compounds in them, which may inhibit the growth of cancers. 

New research shows the leaves of several different medical plants may be capable of stopping the growth of breast, cervical, colon, leukemia, liver, ovaries, and uterine tumors.
